HIPPO is not like a school or classroom environment. There is no teacher and no curriculum. The people who get together at HIPPO are not competitors. We are more like a family, sharing languages together. Participating in HIPPO activities is just as important as playing the tapes. In addition to creating an immersion environment, we need a place to try out the sounds we hear, and people to receive those sounds as language. When we speak even a single phrase, everyone supports and praises us. When we make a mistake, we are never criticized or corrected. In this environment, we want to speak more and more. And, before we know it, WE CAN!

When you talk about learning a language, the first thing that comes into mind is school and study. But Hippo is not a place to study languages. That's why it's fun. We create an environment where many languages can be heard and immerse ourselves in it. Besides, the more languages we know, the more chances we have to meet new people. It may seem like a lot when one language becomes two, but when eleven becomes twelve it is not a big deal for Hippo members.

Well, Hippo is well known for its slogan, "Anyone can speak 7 languages."
These seven languages are:
Spanish, Korean, English, Japanese, German, Chinese and French.
But in 1992, ten years after HIPPO was founded, we started adding the following seven:
Russian, Italian, Malaysian, Thai, Portuguese, Indonesian and Cantonese.
This makes fourteen languages to provide an even more abundant multilingual environment. (Now, there is also Arabic and Hindi)
